WhatsApp on a landline: yes, with WhatsApp Business.

No SMS reaches a landline. A phone call with the code does.

No code? Your money comes back.

You can register WhatsApp with a landline number, but only in the WhatsApp Business app. The standard WhatsApp app does not accept landlines. Because a landline cannot receive texts, you let the SMS timer run out, tap Call me, and an automated voice reads the six-digit code to the landline. The app itself still runs on a smartphone.

Can WhatsApp run on a landline number?

WhatsApp's help centre lists landlines among unsupported numbers, with WhatsApp Business as the only exception.

The landline is only the account's number. WhatsApp Business itself has to be installed on a smartphone, which then works over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Step by step with WhatsApp Business

  1. Install WhatsApp Business On the smartphone that will run the account. It is a separate app from WhatsApp.
  2. Enter the landline in international format Choose the country, then the area code and number without the leading zero.
  3. Let the SMS timer run out WhatsApp tries a text first. A landline cannot receive it, so wait until the countdown ends.
  4. Tap Call me Stay next to the landline. An automated voice reads the six digits; write them down.
  5. Type the code and set up the profile Add the business name, then turn on two-step verification with an email address.

Drawbacks of a landline account

  • Every new verification needs the landline. Changing phones or reinstalling means another call to that line.
  • Business app only. You cannot move a landline account to the standard WhatsApp app.
  • One number, one app. The same landline cannot also run a regular WhatsApp account.
  • Someone has to answer. Call me needs a person at the phone, during office hours or not.
  • Internet phone lines may be treated as VoIP, which WhatsApp does not support.

How codes by call work in general: verification call instead of SMS.

No landline? The alternatives

Mobile SIM or eSIM
Works in both apps, receives the code by text, and stays yours.
Your existing WhatsApp, linked
To use your own account on another device, link it instead of registering anew.
A one-time number
Receives the six-digit code by SMS only, never by call, so it cannot replace a landline. It suits a new account that does not need to stay on one number.

Common questions

Can I use my landline number for WhatsApp?

Only in WhatsApp Business. The regular WhatsApp app does not accept landlines.

How does a landline get the WhatsApp code?

By phone call. Let the SMS timer end, tap Call me, and an automated voice reads the code.

Do I need a smartphone for WhatsApp on a landline?

Yes. The landline is only the number; WhatsApp Business runs on a smartphone or as a linked device.

Can my customers message the landline number on WhatsApp?

Yes. Once registered, customers write to the landline number in WhatsApp as they would to a mobile. Their messages arrive in WhatsApp Business on your smartphone, not on the desk phone.

Can the call go to voicemail?

In most regions, yes: if voicemail is on, WhatsApp's automated system leaves the code there.

Can a temporary number receive the WhatsApp call?

No. Temporary numbers from the app receive texts only.

No code, no charge

You do not pay for a number that brought no code. If nothing arrives, cancel the order in the app; the payment is refunded as soon as the cancellation is confirmed. While it is being checked, the amount stays reserved rather than spent.

Cancelling is possible after a short wait at the start of an order — a number needs a moment before it can be reached at all, and a cancellation in the first seconds would be refused anyway.

If a number has already received one code and you need a second one, you can ask for another SMS on the same number. That is a separate, chargeable attempt and it is not refunded even if no second code arrives; the app shows what it costs before you confirm. There is no subscription: you pay per number, never per minute and never per month.

What this is not for

Do not use these numbers for banks, payment services, wallets or crypto exchanges. Those are excluded — and an account resting on a number that is not permanently yours is an account you can lose. The same goes for anything you need access to for years: government portals, tax accounts, insurance. A temporary number is for a one-off confirmation, not a lasting key to something important.
