Selling online without giving out your number.

The platform may need your number. Your buyers do not.

No code? Your money comes back.

You can sell on Kleinanzeigen, Vinted, OLX, Sahibinden or eBay without any buyer seeing your phone number. The platform verifies a number, but you choose whether listings show it, and messages in the app are enough for almost every sale. The real risk is not the number itself but a buyer who asks you to read out a code.

From our own fact sheets, except where a platform states its own rule. Kleinanzeigen allows no VoIP or other numbers that are not your own, and only numbers from the EU, the EEA and Switzerland; Sahibinden accepts Turkish mobile numbers only; Vinted uses the number for 2-step verification.

Keeping the conversation in the app

  • Pick message-only contact. Kleinanzeigen does not publish your verified number unless you choose to; on Sahibinden your number appears only if you choose phone contact for that listing.
  • Leave the number out of the text and photos. Sahibinden can reject a listing that puts a number in the description instead of the contact field.
  • Answer questions in the chat. A platform can only step in on conversations it can see.
  • Share a number at the handover, if at all, once a buyer has committed and you are arranging the meeting.

The "send me the code" trick

A published number invites one particular scam, reported widely from OLX sellers in Brazil. The pattern works on any marketplace.

  1. Someone calls about your listing They pose as staff of the marketplace and repeat details of the ad to sound genuine.
  2. They trigger a code Meanwhile they start registering your number in WhatsApp on their own phone, so WhatsApp texts you a code.
  3. They ask for it The code is presented as a confirmation for your ad, with a warning that the ad will be removed otherwise.
  4. They take the account With the code they own your WhatsApp and write to your contacts asking for urgent money.

A temporary numberA one-off sign-up on a platform that asks onceNot where the platform asks again or requires your own number, as Kleinanzeigen and Sahibinden do

A temporary number only receives the one sign-up code and is gone after ten minutes, so buyers can never reach it. Use it where the platform never checks the number again, and keep e-mail as your way back into the account.

Common questions

An eBay buyer wants my phone number. Do I have to give it?

No. eBay messages are enough for questions and for arranging the sale. A buyer who insists on a number, or asks for a code sent to it, is a warning sign.

Can I hide my number on Kleinanzeigen?

Yes. Kleinanzeigen does not publish your verified number unless you choose to. Without a published number, buyers contact you through Kleinanzeigen messages.

Why does a buyer ask me to send them a code?

Because the code opens one of your accounts, usually WhatsApp. No real buyer and no marketplace needs it. Do not send it.

Can I sell on Vinted with a temporary number?

Vinted allows one account per number and uses the number for 2-step verification. For an account you sell from regularly, a number you keep is the better choice.

No code, no charge

You do not pay for a number that brought no code. If nothing arrives, cancel the order in the app; the payment is refunded as soon as the cancellation is confirmed. While it is being checked, the amount stays reserved rather than spent.

Cancelling is possible after a short wait at the start of an order — a number needs a moment before it can be reached at all, and a cancellation in the first seconds would be refused anyway.

If a number has already received one code and you need a second one, you can ask for another SMS on the same number. That is a separate, chargeable attempt and it is not refunded even if no second code arrives; the app shows what it costs before you confirm. There is no subscription: you pay per number, never per minute and never per month.

What this is not for

Do not use these numbers for banks, payment services, wallets or crypto exchanges. Those are excluded — and an account resting on a number that is not permanently yours is an account you can lose. The same goes for anything you need access to for years: government portals, tax accounts, insurance. A temporary number is for a one-off confirmation, not a lasting key to something important.
