A Brazilian mobile number (número brasileiro) is +55, a two-digit area code (DDD) and nine digits that start with 9. If you live abroad and a Brazilian app wants a +55 number for its code, you can receive that one SMS on a temporary Brazilian number in the web app, whenever there are Brazilian numbers for that app. Banks and payment apps are excluded, and apps you use every day belong on a number you keep.
How a Brazilian mobile number is built
- Country code
- +55
- Area code (DDD)
- Two digits, for example 11 for São Paulo
- Mobile number
- Nine digits, the first one always 9
- Written out
- +55 11 9XXXX-XXXX
The first digit after the DDD tells you the line type. Anatel, the Brazilian telecoms regulator, assigns 9 to mobile phones, 7 to trunk and radio services, and 2 to 5 to fixed lines. App codes go to mobile lines, so the number you enter should carry that leading 9.
- The extra 9 was added to every mobile number area by area, starting with DDD 11 in July 2012. Old contacts saved with eight digits need it in front.
- From abroad, type +55, the DDD and the nine digits, with no 0 and no carrier code in front.
- Apps with a country list: pick Brazil, then enter DDD and number without the +55.
Which apps people want a Brazilian number for
Apps built for everyday life in Brazil are the usual reason: delivery, rides, marketplaces and short-video apps that you set up with a +55 number when you live there. Abroad, the number on your Brazilian chip may no longer receive texts.
For the two big messengers there are pages with the Brazilian numbers on their own: WhatsApp with a Brazilian number and Telegram with a Brazilian number.
Getting a code on a Brazilian number from abroad
- Choose the app, then Brazil The web app shows whether there are Brazilian numbers for that service right now, with the price and success rate before you pay.
- Copy the number into the app If the app has its own country list, choose Brazil there and type the rest without +55.
- Wait for the code It appears in the web app. If nothing comes within about two minutes, switch to another number at no extra charge.
- Finish the sign-up Then add an e-mail address or another login to the account, so the next login does not depend on that number.
What is excluded: banks and payment apps
Brazilian banks, digital accounts, Pix and wallet apps are payment services, and those are excluded here in every country. An account that holds money must rest on a number that is permanently yours.
The same goes for anything you need for years, such as government portals or your mobile carrier's own account. A temporary number is for a one-off confirmation.
