GuidesWhen the code does not arrive

Apple verification code not sending? Look here first.

Apple tries your devices before it tries your phone number.

No code? Your money comes back.

When you sign in to your Apple Account on a new device or browser, Apple shows a six-digit code on a device you are already signed in to. Only if none is at hand does it send the code to your trusted phone number, by text or by call. If the Apple verification code is not sending, check those devices first, then use Didn't Get a Code.

Where Apple sends the code: trusted device or text

  1. A trusted device shows an alert Any iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch signed in with the same Apple Account can show a sign-in alert. Approve it and the six-digit code appears.
  2. A trusted number gets a text If no trusted device is available, the code goes to your trusted phone number as a text message.
  3. Or a call Apple can also call that number and read the code out.

On an iPhone that uses the trusted number itself, Apple may confirm the number in the background, so you sometimes see no code at all.

Getting the code by call

  1. On the screen that asks for the code, select Didn't Get a Code? (on some screens: Can't get to your devices?).
  2. Pick your trusted number and choose a phone call instead of a text.
  3. Answer and type the six digits you hear.

Keeping your trusted number up to date

You need at least one trusted number that can receive codes. If your iPhone is both your only trusted device and the only phone with that number, losing it can lock you out.

On iPhone
Settings → your name → Sign-In & Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Add Trusted Phone Number.
On the web
account.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → Account Security → Trusted Phone Number.
Apple's own tip
If you have more than one number, add one that is not tied to your iPhone as a second trusted number.

A trusted number has to work for as long as you have the account, so it must be one you keep. A temporary number cannot do that job. Where a temporary number fits is a one-off code at sign-up, and Apple turns down many virtual ranges, so check the success rate in the app first.

Common questions

Why is my Apple verification code not sending?

Apple shows it on your trusted devices first. If none is nearby or online, select Didn't Get a Code? to have it texted or read out by call to your trusted number.

How many digits does an Apple verification code have?

Six.

Can Apple call me with the code instead?

Yes. Choose Didn't Get a Code? and select a phone call to your trusted number.

Can I use a temporary number as my trusted number?

No. It closes after one code, and a trusted number has to keep working for future sign-ins and recovery.

No code, no charge

You do not pay for a number that brought no code. If nothing arrives, cancel the order in the app; the payment is refunded as soon as the cancellation is confirmed. While it is being checked, the amount stays reserved rather than spent.

Cancelling is possible after a short wait at the start of an order — a number needs a moment before it can be reached at all, and a cancellation in the first seconds would be refused anyway.

If a number has already received one code and you need a second one, you can ask for another SMS on the same number. That is a separate, chargeable attempt and it is not refunded even if no second code arrives; the app shows what it costs before you confirm. There is no subscription: you pay per number, never per minute and never per month.

What this is not for

Do not use these numbers for banks, payment services, wallets or crypto exchanges. Those are excluded — and an account resting on a number that is not permanently yours is an account you can lose. The same goes for anything you need access to for years: government portals, tax accounts, insurance. A temporary number is for a one-off confirmation, not a lasting key to something important.
