WeChat wants verification? Here are your three routes.

A friend's scan, a payment card or WeChat Pay. And a phone number that is really yours.

No code? Your money comes back.

WeChat asks new accounts for an extra security verification after sign-up, or again when you use certain features. You can pass it in three ways: a WeChat user scans a QR code for you, you verify with a payment card, or you activate WeChat Pay. Before that comes the SMS code to your mobile number, which can be from any of the 200-plus countries and regions WeChat serves.

Why WeChat asks for verification

Verification is WeChat's barrier against fake and automated accounts. It comes in two layers: the SMS code that proves you hold the number, and the assistance step that proves a real person or a real payment method stands behind the account.

The friend check: who can help and how

  1. Find a WeChat user A friend nearby or any other WeChat user who is willing to help.
  2. Show them your QR code WeChat displays it on your screen during the verification step.
  3. They scan it in their WeChat They use the scanner in their own WeChat, opened from the plus button.
  4. Follow your on-screen prompts WeChat says results vary with the helper's country or region, so the prompts are the final word.
How it works
Friend or other userThey scan your QR code with their WeChat
Payment cardTap Verify via Payment Card and follow the prompts
WeChat PayTap Verify and Activate WeChat Pay and set a payment password

If none of these works during sign-up, WeChat has a feedback form; it asks for the number and screenshots and replies within three working days.

SMS code: what to do if it does not arrive

  1. Check the region code you selected matches your number.
  2. Type the number without the country code; WeChat adds it from the region you picked.
  3. Make sure the number can receive texts: send one to yourself. No signal or no credit stops codes too.
  4. Turn off SMS blocking in security or antivirus apps.
  5. Abroad, switch on roaming and mobile data before you request the code.
  6. Tap Get Verification Code again only after 30 minutes, as WeChat advises.

Signing up without a Chinese number

WeChat registers numbers from over 200 countries and regions, so your own mobile number from home works. Choose your region code first, then enter the number.

  • Travelling to China? Register at home with your own number before you leave, so the SMS reaches you on your usual network.
  • Ask your helper for the friend check before you need WeChat for anything urgent.
  • Keep the number: WeChat asks for it again when you change phones.

Common questions

Can I use WeChat without a Chinese phone number?

Yes. WeChat accepts mobile numbers from over 200 countries and regions; select your region code at sign-up.

Can I verify WeChat without a friend?

Yes, with a payment card or by activating WeChat Pay, both offered on the same verification screen.

Why can't I receive the WeChat SMS code?

Usually a wrong region code, the country code typed twice, blocked messages or no signal. WeChat suggests waiting 30 minutes before trying again.

Can I register WeChat with a virtual number?

WeChat names virtual numbers as a reason for blocking accounts. Use a mobile number from a regular SIM.

No code, no charge

You do not pay for a number that brought no code. If nothing arrives, cancel the order in the app; the payment is refunded as soon as the cancellation is confirmed. While it is being checked, the amount stays reserved rather than spent.

Cancelling is possible after a short wait at the start of an order — a number needs a moment before it can be reached at all, and a cancellation in the first seconds would be refused anyway.

If a number has already received one code and you need a second one, you can ask for another SMS on the same number. That is a separate, chargeable attempt and it is not refunded even if no second code arrives; the app shows what it costs before you confirm. There is no subscription: you pay per number, never per minute and never per month.

What this is not for

Do not use these numbers for banks, payment services, wallets or crypto exchanges. Those are excluded — and an account resting on a number that is not permanently yours is an account you can lose. The same goes for anything you need access to for years: government portals, tax accounts, insurance. A temporary number is for a one-off confirmation, not a lasting key to something important.
